What Is This Tool?
The Dual Citizenship Eligibility Checker is a prototype application that helps you determine your potential eligibility for citizenship by descent (jus sanguinis) in various countries.
Many countries allow you to claim citizenship if you can prove ancestry from that country. However, each country has different rules, requirements, and restrictions. This tool analyzes your family history and provides probability scores based on citizenship laws.
Supported Countries
- Italy: Citizenship by descent with no generational limit (jure sanguinis)
- Ireland: Citizenship through Irish-born grandparents
- Poland: Citizenship by descent for those with Polish ancestors post-1920
- Germany: Complex rules based on historical periods and gender
- United Kingdom: Limited citizenship by descent; ancestry visa available
- Portugal: Citizenship through parents or grandparents
- Hungary: Simplified naturalization for ethnic Hungarians
How It Works
- Data Collection: You provide information about your family members, including birth years, birth countries, and relationships.
- Rules Analysis: The tool applies citizenship laws specific to each country,
checking requirements like:
- Generational limits
- Gender-based restrictions for certain time periods
- Naturalization timing and citizenship breaks
- Historical considerations
- Probability Scoring: Based on the rules, the tool calculates a probability score (0-100%) for each country.
- Guidance: You receive specific next steps and documentation requirements for countries where you have eligibility.
FamilySearch Integration (Future)
This prototype includes a mock FamilySearch integration. In a production version, users could:
- Search for their family tree on FamilySearch.org
- Automatically import ancestor data
- Analyze multiple generations quickly
- Verify historical records and documents
Note: FamilySearch integration requires OAuth authentication and user consent.
